Bradford has eight council Household Waste Recycling Centres, or HWRCs for short. Most of us call them dumps or tips. They’re operated by the City of Bradford District Council on behalf of residents and are strategically located around the city for households to use.

Bradford Tips And Bank Holiday Opening

Bradford tips typically open on bank holidays, however will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day, plus the following day when those fall at weekends. For example, where Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, Boxing Day will Be the Sunday, so tips may close for four days from Saturday to Tuesday.

For more information, the council have a page covering which days are closed in the upcoming festive season on their website.

What Can I Take To The Tip?

Bradford’s network of tips offer a wide range of recycling services, meaning that very little waste ends up in landfill.

To complicate things slightly, sites accept a varying combination of waste. For example, Asbestos is taken at Bowling Back Lane HWRC but not at Dealburn Road tip.

Here’s a run down of what you can take where:

Bradford HWRC Permits

Bradford council offer a permit system to allow residents to access their sites for depositing waste free of additional costs (although specific waste types may incur additional fees).

Waste processing is an expensive business, so permits were introduced to overcome the problem of people living outside of the Bradford council area using the facilities.

If you pay your council tax to Bradford Metropolitan District Council, you will receive one permit for use only by your household. The permit is issued to a property (at the address on the council tax bill), not an individual.

Whoever uses an HWRC site must take the permit with them or they may not be given access to use the tip. It should be displayed in any vehicle you use to access a dump site, however may be transferred between vehicles, provided the waste tipped belongs to that home.

If you do not drive, you can ask someone with a car to use an HWRC on your behalf with your permit, even if they live outside of the Bradford area. The tips must only be used for waste generated by households in the the Bradford area though.

Residents permits only grant access for cars. If you need a van permit this is a separate type of pass – find out more and apply at the Bowling Back Lane or Keighley sites, or read more on the Bradford Council website.
