Wakefield Tips And Bank Holiday Opening

Bank holidays mean that opening hours at the three tips vary. As a rule of thumb, all sites will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

For the remaining bank holidays, sites are usually available, but sometimes with shorter hours. For example, for the Platinum Jubilee, availability of the tips are reduced to 8am to 4pm on Thursday 2nd June 2022.

To get specific details of upcoming bank holidays, check the website here.

Wakefield Council HWRC Permits

The use of the three HWRC’s in Wakefield, South Kirkby and Glasshoughton are limited to residents falling in the Wakefield Council area. The easiest way to know which council’s services you can use is to check who you pay council tax to.

All visitors to HWRCs require permits to prove their entitlement to dispose of waste. Arriving without a valid permit, suitable for the vehicle you’re using and waste you’re depositing could result in being turned away.

Each household can have one or two permits for vehicles to access the tips. Permits are suitable for small vehicles up to normal 4×4 size, and can also pull a trailer no larger than 1.8 metres by 1.2 metres. Apply for your permit here.

If you use a non domestic vehicle such as a van or pickup truck, you may be able to visit to deposit residential waste only with a Commercial Vehicle Permit. Commerical permits can be applied for online here, or in person at the Wakefield Denby Dale Road tip. Commercial permits are limited to a maximum of 12 visits per year, comprising of ten for general household waste and recycling and two for bricks and rubble drop offs.

Very large vehicles are not allowed on site at all, such as Luton vans and lorries.

For temporary hire vehicles, an exception is available where you hire a van for up to 48 hours. Simply turn up at the tip with your hire agreement to prove it is a short term rental and proof of Wakefield residency.
