Derbyshire County Council run nine Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) for residents to use across the county. They’re operated in partnership with HW Martin Waste Ltd and Suez UK to offer recycling and waste disposal services designed to maximise the re-use of waste and minimise what heads to landfill.

There’s an additional location offered by Derby City Council at the Raynesway HWRC site too, but please see the note at the bottom of this page, as it operates differently to the Derbyshire County Council locations.

As you can see, all sites are currently following the same opening schedule, 7 days a week between 8:30am and 6pm.

There are exceptions from time to time for operational reasons, such as skips being emptied, added or removed. These types of interruptions are usually temporary and completes while residents queue.

The only exceptions to the above schedules are for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, when all sites are closed.

Derbyshire Tips And Bank Holiday Opening

As a rule of thumb, all nine tips across Derbyshire open as normal on bank holidays, with the exception of the three where all sites remain closed. Those days are:

  • 1st January – New Year’s Day
  • 25th December – Christmas Day
  • 26th December – Boxing Day

In years where those days fall at weekends, sites will normally be closed on these dates and open on the actual bank holidays if they fall in the following weekdays.

What Can I Take To The Tip?

Derbyshire tips are relatively consistent in what they accept, so here’s a quick guide. Please be aware that from time to time you may not be able to drop off a specific type of waste for operational reasons:

Do I Need A Tip Permit?

Unlike some parts of the country, residents of Derbyshire can use any site with a van or trailer without the need for permits.

Please remember that you cannot use an HWRC to dispose of waste from a business, or visit as a business even if the waste was originally residential.

For example, residential home improvement waste can be taken to the tip by the homeowner if they have done the work themselves, however if a tradesman completes the job, they cannot dispose of the old or unused materials at the HWRC.

How Do They Know I’m From Derbyshire?

It’s possible that you might be asked to prove that you’re a Derbyshire resident to use the tip, however in our experience it’s relatively rare.

Having asked a completely statistically insignificant number of people using the tip in Chesterfield, we only found one person that said they’d ever been challenged, and even then were not asked for ID, just taken on their word that they were local.

Do I Need To Book To Visit A Tip In Derbyshire?

Derbyshire County Council tips are available on demand for all residents in their area. That means booking is not required, you can simply turn up with your waste. Of course, some times are busier than others, so you may need to queue.

However, if you use the Raynesway tip in Derby, you do need to book a slot to drop off your waste, and bookings are limited to twelve per year per household. Bookings can be made here. If you wish to avoid the booking system for the Derby tip, you can use the other
