What Are The Rotherham Tips And Opening Times?

There are four Household Waste Recycling Centres operated by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, affectionately known by most of the locals as the tips or dumps. Each site has subtle differences, so check before you set off to find out what you need to dispose of is accepted.

The four Rotherham tips are located at Bramley, Greasbrough, North Anston and Rawmarsh. Household Waste Recycling Centres are provided for the use of households in Rotherham to dispose of non trade waste during their standard opening hours.

At present, the council has has all four Rotherham HWRC’s open seven days a week between 10am and 4pm, however they have historically had differing closed days through the winter months when the daylight hours are shorter.

Rotherham Tips And Bank Holiday Opening

In general, Rotherham’s Household Waste Recycling Centres remain open on bank holiday on their usual schedule, however they are closed on 1st January (New Year’s Day), 25th December (Christmas Day), and 26th December (Boxing Day).

What Can I Take To The Tip?

The following types of waste can be recycled at Rotherham tips:

• Garden waste such as grass cuttings, plant clippings etc up to the size of small branches that’s from residential gardens
• Paper & card
• Wood
• Glass
• Metal cans
• Scrap metal (not trade waste)
• Appliances (including fridges and freezers)
• Stones, bricks & rubble
• Motor oil from domestic vehicles
• Clothing, material and textiles

In addition, general waste skips are also available for domestic rubbish that cannot be recycled in any of the recycling containers. The exception is hazardous waste which much be disposed of in a controlled and/or regulated manner. This includes asbestos, tyres and trade waste.

Before Visiting A Rotherham HWRC

It’s a good idea to plan ahead before making a trip to the tip.

Permits For Visiting HWRCs

Before visiting Rotherham tips, some vehicles will need to arrange permits. As council services are provided for the benefit of residents, these restrictions are required to prevent unauthorised use of the recycling centres by unscrupulous companies trying to avoid paying their way to dispose of trade waste.

For that reason larger vehicles can only enter the council tips with permits. The broad categories of vehicles this applies to are:

• Vans
• 4×4 vehicles
• Vehicles with trailers
• Mini buses

In order to be issued with a permit, you will need to be able to demonstrate that your vehicle is used for residential purposes rather than commercial activities. This is usually done by showing the log book is registered to a residential address and owned by an individual that resides there.

If your permit application is successful, you will be able to visit a site on six occasions over a period of a year and produce your pass for access. One pass is removed on each visit, and no further passes are available in the same year to that household.
